Our Favorite Playgrounds on the South Shore

Playground seasons is finally upon us in New England we couldn’t be more excited. Since our current house isn’t our forever home, we haven’t invested in a swing set or play set in our backyard. Plus, after the past year we’ve all had, an excuse to get out of the house for a change of scenery, even if it’s just to swing on some swings and have a few snacks, is more than welcome. We have done our fair share of exploring the South Shore over the past 3 years to find playgrounds that we love and I hope you’ll love them, too!

Hingham Fire Station Playground
339 Main St., Hingham, MA
This playground has it all. It’s fenced in, it’s covered by shade, there are public restrooms, and it’s located right next to a fire station and an outdoor hockey rink so there’s plenty for easily-bored toddlers to keep their eyes on. One of the other things we love most about this playground is that there are plenty of trucks to play with that all live at this playground. That means, lots of excavating sand in the sandbox but none of that sand comes home with us. There’s also a really cute ship play structure that’s perfect for early climbers, and plenty of benches and tables to sit at.

Gaffield Park
69-93 River St., Norwell, MA
Tim gets all the credit for finding this gem in the woods. This playground is super set back from the road and completely covered by shade. The play structures are a little tall for toddlers and early walkers, but there is a really fun little tee pee right next to the big structure for the little ones to play in. There’s also a tire swing which is a huge hit for our 3.5-year-old who loves to spin. I would definitely recommend a tick check after leaving this playground, but it’s so worth it.

Hingham Fire Station Playground

Nelson Memorial Park
235 Water St., Plymouth, MA
A playground on the beach – what could be better? This playground has very little shade and only a few picnic tables, but the play structures are so great and there are walking trails right next to the playground, too. It’s on the water but not really on the water so the views are great and it’s a quick walk to throw some rocks in the ocean, but no one is coming home accidentally covered in sand which I love. The parking lot can get busy and a bit tricky to navigate with toddlers, but the whole playground is super stroller friendly.

Martin Richards Playground
Children’s Wharf Park, Boston, MA
This playground is in Boston, not on the South Shore, but it’s in the Seaport, right next to the Boston Children’s Museum, so it’s a quick and easy drive. Parking can be a challenge, but the garage at the Children’s Museum is a short walk from the playground and right near the Boston Fire Museum which is obviously always a stop for us. This playground is not very stroller friendly and some of the inclines are really steep, but the big pirate ship is always a hit and the slides are really fun. It’s probably best to have man-to-man coverage as much as possible at this playground because there are lots of different section that aren’t all visible to each other. The views and proximity to all that the Seaport has to offer are worth this short drive every time!

I hope your Spring days are filled with all the slide races, picnic table snacks, and sandy toes.

Stephanie
