To Infinity and Beyond: A Big Boy Space Room

When TJ turned 4 in October, we knew we wanted to do something for him that would be more than just giving him a gift. After considering a few ideas, we decided we would update his room to be a “big boy” room and he could pick the theme. Right away, he was sure that the theme he wanted was….space. Planets, astronauts, lunar rovers, the whole nine yards.

When we moved into our current home, TJ was 9 months old and I found out I was pregnant with Jacob about two weeks after we moved in so we really didn’t do many updates right away. We converted TJ’s crib into a toddler bed when he was 2-and-a-half and made a few other small updates to his decor, but there was still quite a bit of lingering nursery decor. It broke my heart to take the baby safari animals off his wall, but it was time.

The most significant updates we made to the room were paint – we used Behr color-matched to Benjamin Moore Owl Gray – and converting TJ’s bed, once again, from a toddler bed to a full size bed. I’m so glad we registered for classic furniture when I was pregnant with TJ because his bedroom set has really stood up so well. It doesn’t feel like baby furniture and it’s really beautifully made – what’s now the footboard of his bed even has bite marks from where he would gnaw on it when it was the front rail of his crib when he was teething hahah.

These seemingly minor milestones can really pull at a Mama’s heartstrings. As soon as TJ jumped onto his full size space-themed bed and declared how much he absolutely loved it, I pictured that 9-month-old baby who took his first nap in a Pack N’ Play in that same bedroom on the day we moved into this home. So very much has happened in the 3-and-a-half years we’ve lived here – our family has grown, we’ve hosted family and friends, we quarantined, our boys started preschool, and that 9-month-old baby is now a 4-year-old little boy.

It’s easy to walk into the same room over and over again and not notice the little changes – and then they hit you like an asteroid. Seeing TJ play in his new room brings me so much joy, and I can’t wait to see how he continues to grow…to infinity and beyond.

Stephanie
