Home Office Updates: A Feminine and Functional Space

It’s no secret that I am surrounded by all things boy. My husband is a true guy’s guy, and my two boys are as truck-obsessed as toddlers can be. As someone who has always loved feminine decor, it’s been a challenge to incorporate that into our home and still make it feel functional. When it came time to do some updates to our home this summer and move my home office into a new space, I was so excited for the opportunity to have one room in our home that was all mine and I could decorate exactly how I wanted. While it is very much a functional space, it serves quite a few functions.

One of the most important things about this space was that it had to be organized. My full-time job requires lots of time management and has a lot of moving parts, so I needed to set up a space that would allow me to stay organized easily. The desk in the office is one I’ve had for quite a few years. I love that there is a place to keep wires hidden, and there aren’t a ton of drawers. For me, the more options to keep things hidden, the easier it is to hold onto things I don’t really need. I also love that this desk isn’t clunky and still makes the space feel pretty open.

The shelves are also a piece we’ve had in multiple space in our home throughout the years (most recently in TJ’s nursery closet), and it fits really well in a home office. All of my reference books are visible and easily accessible, and things I don’t need as often are stored in the baskets.

In terms of decor, I wanted to incorporate pieces that were reminders of our life and our travels, and pieces that are true to my personal classic style. It’s a little bit of a melting pot, and I love that. The rug under my desk is from a trip to Turkey when I was in college. The painted portrait on the mantle was done by one of my brother’s friends in memory of our sweet Buster. My undergrad and graduate diplomas hang over my desk as a reminder of what I’ve accomplished and the work that I love.

This space was, admittedly, not a renovation we were looking forward to doing since it was Buster’s room before it became my office, but I think of him every time I see the beautiful hydrangeas outside the window next to my desk. Making our house a home is something I really enjoy doing, and this project in particular was so meaningful. It’s a space where I can be productive and organized, and also creative and fun. I can’t wait to keep adding beautiful pieces as I find them and incorporate more meaningful reminders of our life and our family.
