Classic Style: Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Warmer weather is here to stay! We had a beautiful weekend of temperatures in the 70s and lots of time outside. While my love for oversized sweaters and riding boots runs deep, I’m looking forward to pulling out some of my summer favorites!

I’m so excited to team up with Sarah and Shannon to bring you a classic summer capsule wardrobe. The pieces I’ve include are pieces that come out year after year, even if they have been replaced or upgraded, and I wear on repeat throughout the summer. I hope you enjoy!

White Shorts
What would summer anywhere, but especially in New England, be without white shorts? I’ve always had some variation of white shorts that have been a staple – these scalloped edge linen shorts are, admittedly, a far cry from my frayed denim of years past….but even classic style can mature. I just got this J. Crew Factory pair this Spring and have been waiting to wear them. The scalloped edge makes them a bit more grown-up than simple white shorts, and the material is perfectly lightweight without being see-through. They pair perfectly with a tank or t-shirt and a denim jacket, and with a pullover for cooler evening temperatures.

Linen Pants
I know that linen may not be the most practical material for a mom of two toddlers, but there is something about a lightweight linen pant that just makes me feel effortlessly put together. I have this J. Crew Factory pair in three colors – navy, white, and this bright beautiful pink. They’re easy to throw on and perfect for the evenings when the temperatures drop a bit, or early morning breakfast outside with my boys.

Romper or Jumpsuit
I’m a big fan of a romper. Big. I resisted them for a few years because I thought they were going to be a trend we would look back on and regret, but I was wrong. I am about eight years into my romper-ing ways and I’ll never go back. They’re easy to throw on and layer, provide perfect coverage for busy moms of active toddlers, and, I think, are pretty universally flattering. I would love to be able to carry this through to cooler months with jumpsuits, but I haven’t been able to find one that works well on my petite build – I have short legs event for my 5’3″ height, so I always wind up looking like I’m wearing my big sister’s pants. Rompers, on the other hand, are very petite-friendly. The length on the shorts tends to be flattering, and I don’t feel like I’m struggling with proportions the way I do sometimes with shorts and tops. I love this one from Old Navy, too, because it has functional buttons which makes it nursing-friendly. Unfortunately mine is a few years old, but here is another option from Old Navy and another nursing-friendly option, too!

Lightweight Pullover
This can be anything from a Shep Shirt to a KJP crewneck to a worn-in Nantucket sweatshirt. It’s the perfect layering piece to throw over pretty much anything. I’ve layered it here over my romper and paired it with both the white shorts and linen pants above!

T-Shirt Dress
I live in t-shirt dresses in the summer. Morning coffee runs, over a bathing suit, date nights on the patio after the kids go to bed, all of it. So effortless and easy to pair with anything from flip-flops for the beach, to sneakers for the park, to flats for drinks with friends. This striped dress is one of my tried and trues. It’s worn and washed so well over the years, and I reach for it over and over. J. Crew Factory doesn’t make the t-shirt version anymore, but J. Crew has a racerback version that I absolutely love!

Accessories
Classic black sunnies and an easy pair of slides are musts for me throughout the warmer months, too. I got these Target slides last year and they are so comfy! They don’t feel like they’re going to fall off at all and they’re so easy to pair with pretty much anything. They come in a few colors and I might grab the white ones this year. My J. Crew Factory sunnies are a few years old, but here is a similar designer pair and a more affordable option.

I hope you enjoy my picks and that they inspire to build your own classic capsule summer wardrobe! I’ve linked all my picks on Like To Know It for you, too!
